Nigeria and Germany have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at revolutionizing battery recycling and advancing environmental sustainability. The project, titled Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling, is a joint effort to improve recycling practices, enhance labor conditions, and establish sustainable trade flows for raw materials.

Lead Acid Battery Recycling

The focus of this collaborative initiative is primarily on the responsible recycling of lead-acid batteries, which are extensively used in various sectors including automotive, off-grid solar applications, and backup power systems. With Nigeria being one of the largest economies in Africa and experiencing a surge in demand for batteries due to the expansion of decentralized solar power solutions, the need for proper recycling practices has become paramount.

In this endeavor, partners from Nigerian civil society, the metal processing industry, and the solar industry are collaborating with the Oeko-Institut, a renowned research and consultancy organization specializing in environmental issues. The project aims to develop a cooperative approach to battery recycling while closely liaising with regulatory authorities such as the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Environment and the Nigeria Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

Nigeria boasts one of the largest lead-acid battery recycling industries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with numerous facilities engaged in industrial-scale recycling. However, the project seeks to modernize the sector by introducing environmental, health, and safety standards, thereby mitigating the risks associated with unsound recycling practices.

Through knowledge-sharing sessions and training programs, the project aims to enhance environmental performance and plant safety in recycling facilities. Additionally, concepts for introducing and monitoring binding standards for environmental protection and occupational health and safety are being developed in collaboration with regulatory authorities and local companies.

Lead-acid battery recycling presents both risks and opportunities for the circular economy. While environmentally sound recycling can recover up to 97 percent of all contained raw materials, inadequate recycling practices pose serious health risks to workers and neighboring communities.

According to UNICEF, elevated blood lead levels affect up to 800 million children worldwide, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries. Addressing these health concerns is not only essential for public well-being but also for long-term economic sustainability.
