Non-Profit Group SAFA Launches Initiative to Raise Fibroid Awareness and Treatment Options in Nigeria

A new non-profit organization, the Support Association for Fibroids Awareness (SAFA), is set to launch in Nigeria with a key initiative to raise awareness about uterine fibroids and provide support for those affected across Africa.

About the Support Association for Fibroids Awareness (SAFA)

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by SAFA’s manager, Wemimo Adewuni, the organization will be dedicated to empowering individuals with knowledge about managing and treating uterine fibroids. This includes using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology, a non-invasive treatment option.

The official launch event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24th, 2024 in Surulere, Lagos.

Uterine Fibroids in Nigeria

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that often appear during childbearing years. Symptoms include heavy periods, pelvic pain and reproductive issues.

In Nigeria, according to a 2023 study, the incidence of uterine fibroids was 51.9% in women between the ages of 26-35 years and 44.6% between 36-45 years. Several studies have also shown that the national prevalence amongst Nigerian women is 12.1%.

Lack of Awareness and Support

Despite the high prevalence, SAFA notes that there is a lack of awareness about fibroids, available treatment methods like HIFU and support for those diagnosed.

“SAFA’s mission is to fill this gap by providing education and support to individuals affected by uterine fibroids,” the organization stated.

SAFA offers resources on the signs, symptoms, treatment options and the importance of early detection. The organization also provides a platform for people to share experiences and connect with others facing similar challenges.

Free HIFU Treatment Raffle at Launch Event

As part of its launch, SAFA in collaboration with the Fibroid Care Centre is organizing a free one-day consultation event for women with fibroids on April 24th. One participant will win a free HIFU treatment through a raffle draw.
